What is Pregnancy Massage?

I am now qualified in pregnancy massage so I can offer this treatment at a very special time in a woman’s life and it is a real privilege to be able to do so.

Pregnancy massage is the same as a usual massage but it is tailored specifically to make sure no additional strains are caused and it is carried out ensuring the comfort and safety of mother & baby.

What are the benefits of a Pregnancy Massage?

Pregnancy massage has all the benefits of usual massage (see bullet points below) but most importantly it gives a new mother time to connect with her ever changing body, come to terms with a new arrival and a big lifestyle change that is about to happen.

Pregnancy massage can specifically help with constipation, improve breathing for pregnancy and birth, digestion and muscle aches and pains but it is probably the time in your life when you most need a massage.

During pregnancy due to changes in hormones and the increasing weight of the baby muscle aches are more prevalent like carpal tunnel, sciatica and lower back ache.  As the body prepares for childbirth Relaxin hormones are released to soften the pelvis for labour but the whole body also gets the hormones effects which can cause muscle aches.

How does Pregnancy Massage differ to usual Massage?

Pregnancy massage during the 1st & 2nd Trimester can be carried out with the Client lying on their front using a special padded cushion this has a dip around the abdomen & elevates the whole body up to take pressure off of the baby to protect & enable ultimate comfort for Mum.

During the third trimester when the baby is nearly full term the Pregnancy Massage is carried out with the Client on their side & back both sides are included but more time is spent on the left side.  This is to ensure treatment timings take in to account that no extra pressure from the baby is applied to the large vein (inferior vena cava) which is on the right & carries de-oxygenated blood back from the feet & legs to the heart.  Doctors also recommend during pregnancy lying on the left side with knees bent for the least pressure on organs specifically the liver.
